Top stage and television illusionist Derren Brown is once again set to tour the country with the Audio-Technica AT892 Micro Set headset.
Derren first used the Audio-Technica headset last year, to provide consistent high quality sound for his voice while performing his Olivier Award winning stage show. In February he begins the second, three month, 40 date, leg of this his third tour, and the final opportunity to see this show live.
Previously Derren had been miked with a lapel mic, but this was proving problematic in providing good pickup of his voice at critical moments during the show. Sound engineer Francis Dale of Intasound has worked with Derren’s touring show for two years, and recommended the low visibility AT892.
“On the last tour, getting a consistently good sound with a lapel mic was an issue. Having experienced all the ‘usual’ constraints and quality characteristics, we needed another solution, but one that was very discrete,” he explains.
“There has always been resistance to using a headset mic because they tend to be very noticeable. We purchased the AT892 into hire stock last year and suggested he try it out. The AT892 is extremely low profile, and flesh coloured; unlike a lot of other headset mics, it doesn?t look like it has been designed for an aerobics instructor. It?s largely invisible from the auditorium, and solves the pick up problems, placing the capsule right at his mouth.
“The sound quality is terrific, and not having the mic attached to his clothing has made Derren?s costume changes a lot easier.”
The AT892 MicroSet is a subminiature, ultra-lightweight, omnidirectional, headworn microphone. Utilising a condenser capsule with a diameter of just 2.5 mm, it combines high audio quality with minimum visibility, and a unique, comfortable and secure, under-ear design, that enables accurate signal pickup in a tiny package.
Available in either a non-reflective black and theatre-beige and cocoa skin tones, variants are terminated for use with Audio-Technica UniPak wireless systems, Sennheiser wireless systems with Lemo connector, Sennheiser wireless systems using 3.5 mm locking mini plug, Shure wireless systems, or for wired applications.
